REFERRAL PROTOCOL

The Referral Protocol is administered through the Lands and Natural Resources Department under the direction of the Council of Chiefs.

The protocol is used to review projects and proposed developments taking place within MMFN’s traditional territory. This may include:

  • Forestry
  • Mining
  • Hydro
  • Aquaculture
  • Infrastructure
  • Tourism
  • Other land-based activities

When a project is proposed within MMFN territory, it must be submitted to both the Crown and MMFN. This helps ensure the Nation is involved early in the planning and review process.

Each referral is reviewed using:

  • Traditional knowledge
  • Technical information
  • Environmental considerations
  • Other relevant project details

Following review, MMFN may:

  • Provide comments
  • Request additional information
  • Require further consultation

The Referral Protocol helps protect MMFN lands, waters, resources, and culturally important areas while ensuring the Nation’s rights, interests, and stewardship responsibilities are respected throughout development and planning activities.

Referral Submissions

If you need to submit a referral or request a consultation, please contact the Lands and Natural Resources Department.

We are currently developing an online referral submission system to help make the process easier and more accessible. In the meantime, referrals can be submitted by email to:
