Fisheries Division

The Fisheries Program supports the protection and management of marine and freshwater resources throughout MMFN’s traditional territory.

Our team works year-round to monitor fish populations, collect critical data, and support sustainable fisheries for current and future generations.

We work closely with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Uu-a-thluk, and Ha'oom Fisheries Society to support this work and help care for the waters and resources that have always been important to MMFN.

The program helps ensure our fisheries are managed in a way that respects MMFN rights, traditional knowledge, and our ongoing responsibility to protect the land and waters for future generations.

  • Field work activities include microtrolling, snorkel surveys, fish abundance monitoring, and other fisheries-related data collection throughout the territory.
  • Research activities include stock assessments, population analyses, biological evaluations, and fisheries monitoring in partnership with other organizations and agencies.
  • Program implementation supports fisheries-related initiatives, monitoring programs, stewardship activities, and community-based projects throughout MMFN territory.
  • The Food Security Project aims to help ensure all members have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times, while also strengthening community resilience against food shortages caused by economic or climate-related factors.

Nootka Sound Shellfish Farm

The Nootka Sound Shellfish Farm operates under the Lands and Natural Resources Department and is one of the Nation’s initiatives focused on sustainable shellfish development within MMFN territory. The farm supports oyster and clam harvesting operations and currently operates three shellfish tenures in the Nootka Sound region: Hanna Creek, Plumper Harbour, and Kendrick Inlet.

The shellfish farm has operated on the west coast of Vancouver Island for decades and is a member of the BC Shellfish Growers Association. The operation supports sustainable marine stewardship, local employment opportunities, economic development, and the responsible use of coastal resources within MMFN territory.

Salmon Parks

Salmon Parks is an MMFN initiative focused on protecting and restoring salmon habitat while strengthening the Nation’s long-standing connection to the land and waters within its territory. Through environmental stewardship, education, habitat restoration, and community involvement, Salmon Parks supports the long-term health of local waterways and salmon populations for future generations.

Archaeology Division

The Archaeology Program helps protect important cultural and heritage sites throughout MMFN’s traditional territory.

This work includes identifying and helping preserve archaeological sites and Culturally Modified Trees (CMTs), which hold important cultural, historical, and traditional value.

The program helps ensure that these areas are respected and considered during land-use planning, development, and referral reviews within the territory.

Archaeology is often an important part of the referral and land review process, helping to protect places connected to MMFN history, culture, and traditional knowledge.
