FAMILY (SOCIAL) SERVICES

Welcome to the Family and Child Services Department

Our services are based out of Port Alberni, and we
have a dedicated Family Care Worker who serves
as a liaison between our Nation and Usma.

Usma is a term that means “our treasured ones” in
the Mowachaht/Muchalaht language. It represents
the idea that we all come from our mothers and
are all responsible for caring for one another.

We have numerous garden boxes, a greenhouse, and a marketplace shed that houses our canned and preserved goods for the community. Our Elders and community members have a safe place to sit when they visit the garden to have tea and lunch with the crew. When available, we smoke fish in our community smokehouse and jar and freeze fish.

Our services are based out of Port Alberni, and we have a dedicated Family Care Worker who serves as a liaison between our Nation and Usma. While we do not have the authority to do investigations or removals, we are here to support our members and assist them when Social Workers need to contact them or address any concerns. We aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment for our treasured ones.
